Black Hills Climbing Zine (Submission Request)

Alaska Schub and Julia Mathew are excited to announce that they’re creating a Black Hills Climbing Zine, and are now accepting submissions!

This is an opportunity for the Black Hills climbing community to share their stories, creativity, and perspectives. Whether you have a memorable send report, a poetic reflection on the landscape, a funny crag tale, or some rad climbing-related art or photography, we’d love to see it!

The zine will be a self-published collection celebrating the voices and experiences of climbers in the Black Hills. If you’re interested in being a part of this, scroll down to learn more!

What is a Zine?

Short for “magazine,” a zine is a small-circulation, self-published collection of art, writing, and creative expression. Typically created by individuals or small groups, zines are a way to share stories, ideas, and perspectives outside of mainstream publishing.

Zines often feature a mix of sketches, photography, poetry, personal essays, and community reflections, making them a unique and personal form of storytelling. They have a long history in counterculture movements, DIY communities, and niche subcultures, serving as a platform for creative voices that might not otherwise be heard.

This climbing zine will be a community-driven project that captures the spirit of the Black Hills climbing scene—whether that’s through send stories, crag humor, artistic interpretations of the landscape, or reflections on climbing culture. If you’ve got something to share, we’d love to include it!
